The "unannounced secret project"

If you look at our project list, we have an "unannounced secret project".

What I can tell you is that will be announced sometime in January, and will constitute the other main project that we have selected from the list of potential projects that we disseminated earlier.

For the projects that aren't chosen, we have another plan for them that we will reveal later.

Les Miserables Episode 29 released!

The door opened, and Marius saw the tall Jondrette come in with a candle in her hand. She was as she had been in the morning, only still more repulsive in this light.

- Les Miserables, Volume 3, Book 8, Chapter 16

While Eponine is in the room, Marius is hiding under the bed...
Wasurenai continues to work, even when we are on hiatus.

In this episode of Les Miserables, Thenardier's insidious plans to extort money from Jean Valjean takes a different turn as the Thenardiers recognize both Jean Valjean and Cosette.  Unfortunately, Cosette recognizes them too, but Jean Valjean does not...

A Little Princess Sara Episode 18 released!

And afterward she was called by all of them, "The-little-girl-who-is-not-a-beggar," which was, of course, rather a long name, and sounded very funny sometimes when the youngest ones said it in a hurry.

- A Little Princess, chapter 10

In this episode, not only is Sara denied the pleasure of May Day, a little child hurts her in trying to help her.

Schedule for the rest of the December

As everyone knows, we are winding down the year, and with all the activities and events going on outside of the fansubbing world, we would like to appraise everyone about our schedule for the rest of the year.

Because of our staff members having to go home to their families to celebrate the holidays, we will wind down operations for the rest of the year.  We will try to get at least another episode of A Little Princess Sara out next week, and if everything goes well, maybe we will be able to get another one on top of that.  This is slower than our pace so far, so we apologize for any inconvenience.

This also affects our work for translation support of Les Miserables.  Wasurenai Subs is aware of our schedule and will accommodate us accordingly.

We will be on hiatus starting December 24th.  This will last until New Years Day.  We will resume our normal release schedule on January 2nd, 2011.  I myself will not have access to internet access for this period, so I will not be able to respond to e-mails or blog comments.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 17 released!

"It is a story," said Sara.  "Everything's a story.  You are a story - I am a story.  Miss Minchin is a story."

- A Little Princess, chapter 9

In this episode, we see Ermengarde's inner strength manifest in protecting Sara.  Sometimes, I wonder how Ermengarde would act if Lavinia treated her like Sara did... how different the story might have been!

Episode 16 will be delayed

A Little Princess Sara episode 16 will be released early next week due to circumstances beyond our control.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

Why we do not take donations

I think the best way to answer this question is to split it up into various categories of reasoning.

First, the amount of money this group spends is not really a lot of money.  Raws for the older series are available in just about every P2P application out there.  Therefore, evaluation of series usually do not cost us money except for the electricity bill to keep my laptop turned on to download things.

The series that we do choose to do, we will typically have DVDs imported, if available, in order to get the best raw material.  As we do not work on very many series (due to the lack of manpower), the costs for these is not really too bad, and we can usually pay for this out of our own funds.  Since none of our series are available in Blu-Ray (if I recall, importing the Card Captor Sakura Blu-Ray remasters is almost $1000), this is very easily handled.

Second, if people did donate, what would we do with it?  We really don't need our own web server, we don't need our own tracker, and we simply don't work fast enough to need to spend several thousand dollars on raws at a time.  To have an adequate server with ample resources to serve everyone is actually much more expensive than it looks.  It also makes us more vulnerable if some organization hates us and decides to DDoS the server (I think by now, we've probably made a few enemies).  For this reason, we host this on Blogger and our tracker is on NyaaTorrents.

The third reason is more of a philosophical reason.  Historically, fansubbing is an almost selfless endeavor.  We are here to provide a service.  Back in the days of VHS fansubbing, the only fee you were supposed to charge is a fee to cover the duplication and shipping of tapes.  The Technogirls did experiment with people sponsoring episodes, but that didn't really pan out.  Now, in the days of digisubbing, technically we are supposed to charge nothing (and people who "sell out" usually are ostracized in the fansubbing community).  Fansubbing is supposed to be an almost selfless, free service, done from desire and passion for the anime you are working on.

(As a side note, Google Adsense is turned off here.  It better stay off.)

A Little Princess Sara Episode 15 released!

If she had been older, Miss Minchin would have given her the bigger girls to teach and saved money by dismissing an instructress; but while she remained and looked like a child, she could be made more useful as a sort of little superior errand girl and maid of all work.  An ordinary errand boy would not have been so clever and reliable.  Sara could be trusted with difficult commissions and complicated messages.

- A Little Princess, chapter 8

In this episode, Sara goes to shop for produce at Covent Garden.  She is robbed by beggars, but Peter shows up and finds a way to get her produce without spending one coin.

"Silence!" replied the father.  "I am suppressing the freedom of the press!"

- Les Miserables, Volume 3, Part 8, Chapter 7

In this episode, Thenardier begins setting up his plan to extort money from Jean Valjean.  Marius peeks through a peephole and discovers the whole setup.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 14 released!

"Yes," answered Sara, nodding. "Adversity tries people, and mine has tried you and proved how nice you are."

- A Little Princess, chapter 9

In this episode, Ermengarde teaches Sara a valuable lesson, and Sara gains another person to support her through her new life.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 13 released!

Sara begins her first day of work, with Becky's friendship and support.  She will need it to deal with Miss Minchin, Lavinia, James, and Molly.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 12 released!

Again, I feel one picture is insufficient, so I shall put in two.

This episode is a continuation of episode 11.  Sara's life has now gotten much worse because of Miss Minchin's "compassion".

You can obtain this episode from your standard anime torrent indexing sites.

We are around 1/4 of the way through the series.  Starting from here on out, the anime will begin deviating from the novel slightly (the novel glosses over this period a bit, which the anime puts more detail on how Sara has to deal with her new life).  However, the way they have done it gives other characters (Lavinia comes to mind on this one) a lot more character development than the novel originally had.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 11 released!

As one picture is not really enough to describe this episode, we shall use multiple pictures.

This episode starts out with Sara getting ready for her birthday party.

However, Mr. Barrow arrives at the Seminary with some news.

After he tells Miss Minchin what he knows, Miss Minchin abruptly changes her behavior, as she literally abuses Becky for overhearing the conversation.

Then, Miss Minchin goes to the dining room where she brusquely gives Sara the news that Mr. Barrow told her.  From here on out, Sara's life will never be the same.

A little bit of news

A Little Princess Sara episode 11 will probably be slightly delayed.

The sheer amount of dialogue, plus the content of the episode is making it rather difficult to work on.  We are also having some minor issues with raw preparation that will impact our encoding speed.

We apologize for any inconvenience.  We will try our best to get it out tomorrow, but if it doesn't, you'll know why.  Those of you who have watched this episode will probably understand.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 10 released!

Sara's birthday is coming up, and Miss Minchin decides to buy Sara a birthday present after finding out the supposed truth of the diamond mines.  However, would Sara be happier with Miss Minchin's present or with Becky's present?

Les Miserables Episodes 26v2, 27v2

For those of you who were having problems with the audio for Les Miserables (mostly people using older players and people using QT/Perian on Mac OS X), v2 encodes have been released to address these issues.

Les Miserables Episode 27 released!

This episode is an episode that does not go with any particular chapter in the novel.  Here, we find the Friends of the ABC, Jean Valjean, Cosette, and the clergy trying to find a little girl that ran away because she thought her mother did not want her any more.

You can obtain this episode from your standard torrent indexing sites.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 9 released!

This episode corresponds to the chapter where Sara finds out about her father's new business venture.  Here, Sara receives a letter from her father about diamond mines, and we see Becky treated in probably the worst way so far until she gets to Sara's room at night.

You can obtain this episode from your standard anime torrent indexing sites.

Licca Fansubs staff members will be off for the Thanksgiving holidays.  We will resume our release schedule on November 28th.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

A few things about working on Les Miserables

Now that the dust and excitement has settled a bit, I would like to discuss our thoughts and goals for Les Miserables: Shoujo Cosette, as part of the joint with Wasurenai Fansubs.

As previously mentioned, we are here to provide translation support.  This series, like most World Masterpiece Theater series, requires due diligence in its translation.  To translate this series properly requires several things:
  1. Reading the actual novel.  That is no small task, considering that most editions are over 1200 pages, and it is not used that much in your standard English class at school.
  2. Historical and cultural research.  In particular, French history tends to be very exciting, and oftentimes confusing as well.  Reading the actual novel actually will fulfill a part of the needed research, as the novel is known for its exposition of politics, philosophy, and the historical events of the time.
  3. Religious research and understanding.  Catholicism does feature prominently in the novel in some form.  Again, reading the actual novel fulfills some of this requirement.
  4. Careful matching of the meaning of the dialogue versus dialogue in the book.  What we mean by this is that the spirit of the novel should be preserved in the dialogue.  We admit this is rather subjective, but it is something that we keep in our back of our minds as we assist in the translation.
To make this series relatively kid-friendly, the anime does deviate from the novel in key places.  A lot of events are actually done slightly out of order, and there are filler episodes that do not correspond to any chapter.  Because of this, an exact match of the dialogue to the novel is not possible and is actually undesirable.  In fact, the version of the novel we are using uses a translation dated back to the late 19th century, and language structures have changed since then.

In terms of release speed, from the perspective of Licca Fansubs, we actually have no right to force Wasurenai to release at our speed.  What we do hope is that we will do our part as efficiently and precisely as possible.  That alone should allow releases to come faster than previously.

As previously noted, things like editing, timing, styling/typesetting, and encoding are done by Wasurenai.  Our staff members are also standing by to assist in any capacity if needed.  It is actually better to maintain consistency between editing, typesetting, and encoding to ensure that continuity is maintained.

Feel free to comment on this.  If you need to make a criticism, don't direct it to other people commenting; do direct it to us.

A few words on release scheduling for A Little Princess Sara

Everyone has probably figured out by now that we're going a little bit slower on A Little Princess Sara, compared to our speed on Super Doll Licca-chan.

Currently, we are aiming for a release every two days.

There are two reasons why each episode takes longer.
  1. It takes us 4 hours to translate each A Little Princess Sara episode, compared to 2 hours for each Super Doll Licca-chan episode.  This is because it is significantly more difficult.  If the episode doesn't have French dialogue, typically we will have an episode translated in 3 hours.
  2. Since we are encoding both an XviD version and a h.264 version, the encoding time is increased threefold.
So, we apologize in advance if we don't sub this as fast as we did Super Doll Licca-chan.  We will do our best to finish this series.  It deserves no less.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 6 released!

This episode corresponds to the first half of chapter 5.  We introduce Becky, the scullery maid.  This scene here is probably one of the most moving in the series so far.

You can obtain this episode from your standard anime torrent indexing sites.

Our policy on softsubs

The policy here at Licca Fansubs is we do not use softsubs for any reason whatsoever.

Before everyone starts picking up pitchforks and torches, let me dispel some reasons for hardsubs.
  1. Hardsubs do not prevent subtitle theft.  There is nothing stopping another group/reencoder/person on the street from typing out the script, retiming it for whatever raw they use, and rereleasing it on their own.  In fact, this is the modus operandi for most of the non-English fansub groups out there, and there is nothing wrong about doing that.
  2. As a side note to #1, there is an OCR program out there that can extract hardcoded subs.  A little test of the program with some of our releases show that you can pull out our subs very easily.
  3. Hardsubs have almost as many limitations on what you can do with it as softsubs.  Softsubs can pretty much do everything that hardsubs did years ago, with the notable exception of some of the fancier karaoke effects.
There are two reasons why we stick to hardsubs.  Both of them are probably personal and petty, so we apologize in advance.
  1. Our editing and typesetting/styling is part of what makes each episode special to us and what we like to have pride in.  Every word, and font used is chosen to complement the series.  As part of our process, we try our very best to make sure everything looks aesthetically pleasing.  We also try to make our font choices so that you can read it on a reasonably decent TV.  (If I get into the mood, I should probably tell how I used to evaluate font readability several years ago.  I don't have any of that equipment now.)
  2. Most of us are much older than your typical fansubber these days.  As for myself, I actually got my start in fansubbing around 2003.  Because of that, my encoding methods and practices are very old-fashioned.  This also means that a lot of the rules I follow in terms of how I conduct the operation of this group is based on what people did back in that time.  My staff are okay with that, and that is what is most important.  Some of the really grizzled veterans will probably know, based on what I said, could probably easily guess a third reason why I stick to hardsubs, and they would probably be correct.
We also had recent comments on our choice of containers for our h.264 releases.  The only thing I can say about that is that I know how to deal with Matroska better than the MP4 container, so that was my main choice.  h.264 + AVI is a recipe for disaster that I try to avoid.

One last thing: if you want to comment on this, please attack just me and not your fellow commenters.  I would appreciate that very much.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 2 released!

This episode corresponds to the second half of chapter 1.

You can obtain this episode from your standard anime torrent listing sites.

There is going to be a slight delay for episode 3 due to some logistical issues.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

A few things...

If anyone is wondering about our source of our raws for this series, it's this:

This was very well worth getting.

There are a few things we would like to say about our goals for subbing A Little Princess Sara:

First, we would like to acknowledge the previous groups that did the first two episodes of this series.  They have set a really high bar on how well the series should be done and we will try to meet or exceed that standard.

Second, by doing this series, we will be attempting to fill some really large shoes.  This series deserves a quality presentation and treatment as all popular modern series get (maybe even better treatment), and we intend to do so.

Third, we will do our best to release episodes on a regular basis, and to release this at a reasonably rapid rate.  We won't be able to do this as fast as Super Doll Licca-chan (partially because this series is harder to translate), but we will go as fast as we can.  It has been too long that this series has been waiting for someone to sub it to its entirety, and we aim to complete it with the same efficiency as we did Super Doll Licca-chan.

A Little Princess Sara Episode 1 released!

For all of you wanting us to do a World Masterpiece Theater series, your wish has been granted.

This episode corresponds to the first half or so of Chapter 1 of "A Little Princess".

You can obtain this episode from your standard anime torrent indexing sites.

Note: The h.264 version encode is hardsubbed.

We have a surprise coming up!

We're going to release the first episode of one of our next projects really soon (like, within the next 2 hours or so).  We apologize for the wait and hopefully you all will enjoy our next project.

This new project will have two releases per episode: an XviD encode with AVI and a h.264 encode with Matroska.  Both will be released at the same time.

On hiatus/break until Halloween, and future schedule

We will be on hiatus until Halloween due to real life (tm).  We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.  We will resume our regular release schedule on Halloween.

Also, as you all probably know, we're almost finished with Super Doll Licca-chan.  Currently, we have 6 episodes left.  On our regular release schedule, we should be done by the middle of the second week of November.  So, based on that, we are planning on a few things at that time:

1.  We will release episode 52 (the final episode).
2.  We will probably have a batch torrent for all 52 episodes probably a day or two after the release of episode 52.
2a.  BakaBT will probably have someone offer a batch torrent themselves.  Because of the nature of how BakaBT operates, I cannot offer a batch torrent that will use both NyaaTorrents and BakaBT.  I cannot offer torrents on BakaBT because I do not have the necessary priviledges to do so.
3.  It will probably take us about a week to do all the necessary preparation work, such as naming conventions, historical research, cultural research, and other sundry details before we will release the first episode of one of our two next projects.  It is especially important that we try to get this done right the first time.  This is especially true of the two potential series that are World Masterpiece Theater series.
4.  We may do a side project in the meantime.  (We have several cooking for when we need a quick break from our main series.)

Hardsubs versus softsubs

This is kind of an open-ended post.  As the encoder, I have two questions which I would like to ask the people who are following us.

1.  What are the advantages and disadvantages of hardsubs and softsubs? I know most of the technical advantages and disadvantages myself, but I would like to see what other people think in terms of "non-technical" advantages and disadvantages.  (If there are technical advantages that I don't know about, feel free to tell me as well.)

2.  As a group, Licca Fansubs tends to frown upon using softsubs for our releases.  How does that change your perception of the group in general and your perception of our releases?

Please answer the questions as comments to this post.  Please be honest about your opinions; there is no need to sugarcoat criticism here.  However, please do not attack other people who are commenting on their opinions (basically, only attack me, not your fellow commenters).

Thank you in advance!

Super Doll Licca-chan Episode 39 released

An attempted carjacking by Misty does not go according to plan.

You can obtain this from your typical anime torrent indexing sites.

This marks the 3/4 mark.  Here's what's coming up all the way to the end:

1.  Misty, in my opinion, suffers the worst fate out of all the antagonists.
2.  Yae/Devaul gets more desperate.
3.  We have a new ending song, a new opening song, and probably the best insert song in all the series (Destiny).  (Episode 40 will take a bit longer than normal because of that.)
4.  Pierre's song becomes really important (even more important than now).

We've decided on our next projects!

We got lots of good suggestions from people on what to do next after we finish Super Doll Licca-chan.  Most of them are very good, but we aren't a very big group staff-wise, so we can only do a very small number of series.  We apologize if we don't get to do whatever series you want us to do.

It came down to these final 5 choices.  In alphabetical order, they are:
  1. A Little Princess Sara (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=444)
  2. Denshin Mamotte Shugogetten OVA (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1656)
  3. Magical Idol Pastel Yumi (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1691)
  4. Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2289)
  5. The Dog of Flanders (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=435)
We've picked two of these for our next projects after Super Doll Licca-chan.  You're not going to get to know until we release them.  We'll let the suspense build up.
