Perrine Episode 37 released!

"Now, would you like to take the position that he has been unable to hold? To commence with, you will have ninety francs a month. If I am pleased with you I may do more for you."

Overwhelmed with joy, Perrine stood before the blind man unable to say a word.

"Why don't you speak?" he said at last.

"I can't ... I don't know what to say ... to thank you," she said. Her voice broke. "I feel so...."

"Yes, yes," he said. "I know how you feel. Your voice tells me that. I am pleased. That is as good as a promise that you will do all you can to give me satisfaction. Now let us change the subject. Have you written to your grandparents?"

- En Famille, Chapter 18

In this episode, Talouel and Theodore were not pleased that Perrine was now Vulfran's secretary.  Unfortunately for them, Vulfran caught their displeasure, confronted them with that observation, and subjected Perrine to a test that shows what she is capable of doing that neither of them are capable of doing.

Porphy no Nagai Tabi Episode 26 released!

(Yes, Porphy is hotwiring a car.)

In this episode, Porphy ends up in Sicily.  He somehow ends up getting into a dispute between two Sicilian families.

This marks the half-way point of Porphy no Nagai Tabi.  One of the things you probably noticed is that we haven't really seen Mina and Isabella for quite a while; that will change soon as soon as Porphy gets out of Sicily, which will be happening really soon.  He will be moving north up the Italian peninsula for the next 13 episodes.

The process of translation checking

As one of our roles in the Perrine joint project is to do translation checks, I would like to take some time to describe how I personally do translation checks.  As for everything that is done in fansubbing, how I do it is potentially different from how other folks would do the same task.

One of the things you probably noticed from our recruiting efforts is that we do not try to recruit someone who specifically does translation checks.  The reason is very simple; it is my opinion that a translation checker must be able to be a translator as well.  There is no point in being a checker when you do not know the language well enough to translate it, as lacking proficiency in the language that is being translated will cause gross translation errors to be missed.

My mindset when it comes to translation checks is almost exactly the same as translating an episode.  The only difference is that I do not have to type out the translation if the translation is similar enough to how I would translate it.  For this reason alone, translation checking goes considerably faster than translating.  However, in all other aspects, I am still literally translating an episode.  I am merely not typing out my entire translation.

A lot of my translation is by instinct, and the same thing goes for doing a translation check.  If a translation does not feel right, I will investigate the lines in question in detail until the translation is satisfactory.  Therefore, unless if the translation is completely correct, it usually will take me about a couple of hours to do a translation check.  Compared to three or four hours for a typical translation (since I have to type it out), it definitely goes a lot faster.

For this reason, any series I do a translation check requires the same amount of background research and preparation as any series I translate.  It is the best way to ensure a good translation.  On the flip side, as a translator, I appreciate having someone check my work.  I am not a perfect translator, and I do make mistakes.  With another set of eyes looking over my work, it ensures that everyone will benefit from a good translation when they watch the episode.

Perrine Episode 36 released!

Monsieur Vulfran's fingers tightened over hers. She did not understand this movement.

"Oh, forgive me; I am boring you," she said. "I am telling you things perhaps that are of no interest."

"You are not boring me, Aurelie," said the blind man. "On the contrary, I am pleased to know, what an honest little girl you are. I like people who have courage, will, and determination, and who do not easily give up. If I like finding such qualities in men, how much more pleasure does it give me to find them in a girl of your age! So ... you started with five francs thirty-five centimes in your pocket?..."

"A knife, a piece of soap," continued little Perrine, "a thimble, two needles, some thread and a map of the roads, that was all."

- En Famille, Chapter 17

In this episode, Perrine's grandfather hears about how she got to Maraucourt.

Expectations for Perrine

I've been meaning to make this post yesterday, but due to things happening and the fact that I'm still a bit queasy, I've had to delay this post until today.

Perrine was another one of the WMT series that was frequently requested.  C1 Anime staff members generously gave us the remaining translated scripts for Perrine right before they shut down.  With that, we will be continuing their work and finishing up the series.

This joint project had been in planning for the last couple of months.  Our role in this joint will be mostly translation checking, encoding, and any other roles that we may be asked to assist in.  Our plan is a release once every week or two weeks, depending on the schedule of the other staff members involved in this series.

For the most part, we will try to stay within the spirit of how C1 originally did the series.  This series has one of the most beautiful endings out of all the WMT series, and we will make sure that our work on the series will do it justice, as fansubbers should strive to do.

Perrine Episode 35 released!

"These fellows won't do much before Fabry returns," he said. "That's not surprising considering the supervision you have given them, uncle."

He said this jeeringly, but instead of taking his words lightly, his uncle reprimanded him severely: "If you had been able to attend to this matter, I should not have been forced to have called in this little girl, who until now has only pushed trucks."

Perrine saw Casimir bite his lip in anger, but he controlled himself and said lightly: "If I had foreseen that I should have to give up a government position for a commercial one, I should certainly have learned English in preference to German."

"It is never too late to learn," replied his uncle in a tone that brooked no further parley.

The quick words on both sides had been spoken in evident displeasure.

Perrine had made herself as small as possible. She had not dared move, but Casimir did not even turn his eyes in her direction, and almost at once he went out, giving his arm to his uncle. Then she was able to give free rein to her thoughts. How severe M. Vulfran was with his nephew, but what a disagreeable, horrid youth was that nephew! If they had any affection for one another it certainly was not apparent. Why was it? Why wasn't this nephew kind to his old uncle, who was blind and broken down with sorrow? And why was the old man so hard with a nephew who was taking the place of his own son?

- En Famille, Chapter 16

We will be jointing with Kiteseekers and Wasurenai to finish up Perrine Monogatari (The Story of Perrine).

In this episode, Perrine works as an English interpreter for her grandfather.  At this point, he does not know that she is his granddaughter.  However, she has now managed to get into the middle of a contentious battle for control of her grandfather's business.

How about another project? (and some news)

First thing, I would like to apologize for not having Porphy and Annette episodes out on a regular basis.  I have been fighting a viral infection all week and have not had the time or the energy to properly do fansubbing activities.  Episodes will be released as my health permits me to work on fansubbing.

Second thing, we will be jointing with a couple of other groups to finish up a series that did not get fansubbed in its entirety.  We will be releasing the next episode in that series within the next day or two.
