Pollyanna Episode 1 released!

For our new World Masterpiece Theater project, we have selected the WMT from 1986, Ai Shoujo Pollyanna Monogatari (The Story of Pollyanna - Girl of Love).

We start the series right before the novel begins.  We introduce Pollyanna, her father, and the people in the small Western town where Pollyanna grew up, and we see how Pollyanna makes life fun (and difficult in some cases) for the people living there.

You can obtain this episode from your standard anime torrent indexing sites.

This release is in three formats: a XviD AVI version, a h.264 hardsubbed Matroska version, and a VP8/WebM version.  If you need assistance with VP8/WebM playback, please consult the link on the top of the page.

  2. Not to belittle your release (I am very thankful that you chose this) but why release the vp8 version? It really serves no good purpose...

  5. I haven't watched this yet but in the third screenshot "Husband, do you intend to insult me?" sounds a little awkward.. don't you think it should be "honey," or "dear,"?

  6. @Anonymous: I don't think couples used the words "honey" and "dear" back then. Most WMT shows took place in the mid to late 19th century, so language and sentence construction were a bit strange back then. You should read books like Little Princess Sara and Five Little Peppers for proof. Everyone talked funny back in that time period.

  9. I'm glad!

In that scene in question, there were two issues with using a more "endearing" term.

    1. Yes, as Julia mentioned, this does take place in a time where the use of modern "endearing terms" (which didn't really come into common use until the 1950s or so). (This actually takes place around the early 1900s; note the motorcars.)

    2. Considering that scene was not exactly a happy scene, it is no wonder Mrs. White would probably be in no mood to call him anything nicer than that. If this seems contradictory to the premise of the anime, watch further in the episode and you'll understand.
